We've been on the island for a little more than 24 hours and Benny and I just completed day one of Mission Okinawa: Find a place to live.
The first day of house hunting is always the worst. You never know what you are going to find. And if you are me, your hopes are high that you will find the cutest place that is also in your price range. And you never find this place on the first try.
This morning, Benny and I met with your typical grumpy government worker who explained the procedures for living on-base and off-base. She offered us two duplexes and gave us 24 hours to consider these on-base homes. If we declined these two-story houses, then we have no other options for living on base and must find military-approved off-base housing from a list. Obviously this isn't much time to decide if you want to hang your hat in the 2,000-square-foot house across the street from a family of five for the next three years, but I don't think the Navy really cares.
Were these houses livable? Of course.
Did I want to live in them for three years? Not if I can help it.
So we made an appointment with a housing agent off base to see what the options are out in town and this is where your help comes in.
We are going to pretend that Benny and I are on the popular HGTV show, House Hunters. It's where television viewers watch as a couple looks at three homes they are considering to buy in a particular city. The viewers weigh the pros and cons of each sale along with the potential buyers. Benny and I aren't looking to buy, only rent, but I think we can use the principles of the reality show to get us through this interactive posting.
Here is what I'm going to do: I'm posting the three options Benny and I looked at today and I want feedback on them. There isn't any pictures of the on-base housing. We already ruled out that option.
Instead we have three on-base options. Two are houses and one is an apartment. Please look at the pictures and tell me what you think. You can post your comments here and email them to me directly.
Now let the house hunting game begin ....
